History of the St George Singers Choir
The St George Singers were formed over 40 years ago by a group of singers who used to attend school together in Bristol. Originally they were asked to sing at the school Christmas concerts, but decided they would like to sing together more often. The first concert was conducted by Jim Williams, who is our Musical Director and joyfully still conducts us today.
Many of the first concerts were performed by a smaller group throughout multiple pubs in the St George area of Bristol, eventually growing to the number of singers we have today, performing in churches all over Bristol and even in places as far as Devon and Cornwall. We are always looking for new locations to sing at; if you have somewhere you would like us to sing for charity, please get in touch.
Currently the St George Singers boasted up to 60 members before the pandemic spread, and while our numbers are smaller since, they are now growing and our desire to create music together is stronger than ever. We are a community choir, meaning there are no auditions. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and friendly community who share a love for music. We have some members who can read music and some who don't - it is perfect for people of all ages and abilities.
Every year we chose a charity to support, usually local charities, at our concerts. We do not sell tickets to our concerts, but rely on donations only as we believe music should be available regardless of income. No members take any money from the donations; every penny gets sent to the charity. Members contribute voluntary minimal subs each year which go towards heating/renting costs of Holy Trinity Church where we practice each week and we sing a lot of music from the public domain to keep costs substantially reduced.
